One emerging technology trend worth watching is Autonomic Computing, the development of computer complexes that detect equipment and software failures and repair them automatically. Autonomic complexes will anticipate failures by using error frequency indicators etc. to determine when a component is about to fail and proactively request that it be replaced before it actually fails. Eventually, these autonomic complexes will become auto-provisioning; analyzing workload and scheduling the installation of new equipment as needed.
To assure Information Security, Autonomic complexes will also have to deliver Information Security capabilities. Additionally, enterprises will ultimately need Autonomic Networks: networks that autonomically detect security as well as operational problems and repair them. In the long term, the recognition of emergent security problems will probably require networks with Artificial Intelligence capabilities. Products that move the industry in this direction should be successful, and there should be opportunities for first-mover advantage.
